“One’s own mind, the essence of dharmata, great peace.”
Amid waves of personal and collective suffering and heartbreak, peace can feel far away for so many of us. Yogis, saints, ancestors, sages through millennia have given voice to their understanding of peace. But how can we find genuine peace? How can we find it for real in our own life? After all, if we merely repeat the words of others, how can we ever realize genuine peace for the benefit of others as well as ourselves?
This morning we’ll begin to explore experientially the timeless wisdom, compassion, beauty, and unconditional love to be found in Nyoshul Khenpo’s pithy spontaneous song of realization, Natural Great Peace. Exploration of the meaning of this heart song will include the meditation of resting in natural awareness.
A hidden yogi, Nyoshul Khenpo (1932-1999) was a lineage holder in the dzogchen tradition known as Longchen Nyingthig. He was one of the key figures in transmitting this lineage in the twentieth century. Born in Tibet, Nyoshul Khenpo left for India in 1959. He studied and practiced with many of the great teachers of his day, including Nyoshul Lungtok Tenpai Nyima, and trained in turn many of the current generation of lineage holders, including Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, and Lama Surya Das.
A realized master of awareness, Nyoshul Khenpo’s timeless songs and teachings continue to resound, nourish, and inspire.
